Next-Gen Wrangler Rumored to Have Aluminum Body

Jeep won't be redesigning the Wrangler again until either 2017 or 2018, but when that time comes, Jeep may follow in the footsteps of what Ford recently did with its F-150. That's right, Jeep could be turning to an aluminum body for the next generation of Jeep Wranglers. Aluminum has considerably lighter weight than steel, but it costs more. Even if Jeep does make the rumored changeover to aluminum, the body-on-frame design would remain; this will surely make the most enthusiastic of off-roaders happy. Depending on the model, the current Jeep Wrangler weighs in at a minimum of 3,760 pounds upwards to a max weight of 4,340. But the introduction of aluminum would result in a body weight much less than that range, which would in turn provide a notable improvement in the gas mileage the Wrangler could achieve. The current Wrangler's combined EPA mileage hovers around 18 mpg. There is no word, however, on the status of the future generation of Jeep Wranglers' solid axles and its 6-cylinder engine.
